Coriolanus: "I do beseech you,
Let me o'erleap that custom; for I cannot
Put on the gown, stand naked, and entreat them
For my wounds' sake to give their suffrage.
Please you that I may pass this doing." (2.2.134-138)
I find it amusing that this mighty general, this man of war, this die-hard soldier, is so willing to go to war against the Volscians and yet here he is, begging to not go to the Plebians in order to seek their favor. He is a lion on the battlefield, but somehow metamorphoses into a timid and arrogant cat in the senator's court. I'm not exactly sure about what I think of Coriolanus; he is a war hero, yes, but he is so arrogant and holds such contemptible and malicious feelings towards commoners.
Also, what is the deal with Brutus and Sicinius? Why do they hate Coriolanus so much that they turn the crowds against him even after they had already decided to vote for Coriolanus? Granted, he IS arrogant and hates the people, but everybody else is willing to look past this fault...why don't they do the same?
